Procrastination…

I really want to sculpt/build a lifesize replica of Carrie from the Steven King horror film.  However, I’m struggling with finding time, good clean reference photos, space, and desire to build!  Not to fear my fellow haunters, I have faith that eventually I will lose these winters blues and the pressure of the 2009 season will begin to rain down…which in turn should ignite a will to build again!

I just wanted to post an update of what’s going on with me.  I have also dropped the ball on uploading pictures of my 2008 haunt…I will eventually do this too!

Fruelu Mughar

Fruelu

This is my first completed prop of 2008.  Fruelu Mughar is his name.  He’s a gnarly little troll lurking under trees and bridges waiting for his next meal to walk by.  He’s made of pulp mache over a pvc and chicken wire form then airbrushed.  He has amber LED eyes.  He stands approximately 2.5 ft tall and his walking stick is simply a piece of driftwood found on the North Shore of Lake Superior.  I’m super happy with how he turned out!

Ghorgh

This is Ghorgh  He’s a combat oriented Beast often used in battles and exhibition matches because of his extreme and vicious bashing and pummeling abilities.

I started with a full mask - one of the full-face plastic ones from a local arts and crafts store.  I cut off the bottom part of the face so that I could add the teeth.  I plan on re-attaching the bottom jaw to the upper but still trying to figure out the details of it first.  I also want to paint him someday.  I sculpted the face using PaperClay.

Nosferatu

This was another practice sculpt.  For this one I used images of Nosferatu as references for my sculpt.  Someday I may try to paint it.

The Mummy

This was a practice sculpt learning how to use PaperClay.

Sid Philpott

This was my first attempt at sculpting.  I used a foam wig head for the base form then used a water-based clay for the sculpting medium.  I loved the smoothness and feel of the clay however as it dried, it shrunk causing it to crack and break.  I’ve never sculpted before and really liked how it just seemed to come together without much planning.  Originally, I wanted Sid to be my grave digger, but since it’s unfortunate breaking it has now become a conversation piece on my desk at work.

Bloody Skull Fountain

This is my interpretation of a skull fountain.  There are many skull fountain how-to’s available on the web and mine was kind of a conglomeration of ideas collected by the different ones I found.  The skulls are a mixture of cheap Walgreen’s skulls and white skulls I bought from www.crypticimports.com and painted to match the others.  There’s a pond pump in the birdbath and red-color water runs up to top skull and flow out of the eyes and down the front of the other skulls.  I wanted the skulls to look more random and less placed - that was difficult to accomplish but I think I got close.  I really struggled with getting the water to flow down the front of more skulls than just the top one but after much trouble, I got to work out okay.

Hand Candle/Lamp

This was one of the first props I made.  The hand is made from pvc and paper mache and brushed on acrylic paint.  The light is a simple flicker bulb set in a piece of pvc.  The bulb wiring is run up the inside of the pvc arm and out the back of the wooden plaque.
